How to book the DGT theory exam independently
You do not need a driving school to sit the theory exam. Pay DGT fee 2.1, get a medical certificate from an authorised centre, book an appointment and submit your application at your provincial traffic office (Jefatura). You will then be given an exam date.
Fee code 2.1, the published amount of €94.05, two exam attempts per fee and the 90-day validity of the medical report were checked against DGT sources on 9 October 2026. Always confirm the current amount and requirements before paying.
Step by step
- Pay DGT fee 2.1 online on the DGT electronic office and keep the receipt.
- Get your medical report at an authorised CRC centre.
- Book an appointment (cita previa) with your provincial Jefatura.
- Submit your ID, photo, medical report, fee receipt and application form; ask for the exam in English.
- Practise mock exams until you consistently score 3 mistakes or fewer.
- Attend on your assigned date with your original ID.
Who can apply
You need to be ordinarily resident in Spain (or a student living in Spain for the required period) and hold a valid ID: DNI, or NIE/TIE for foreign residents. The minimum age for permit B is 18; check the DGT page for current age and residency details.
Documents you need
Valid DNI or NIE/TIE, a recent passport-style photo, the medical report (informe psicofísico), proof of payment of fee 2.1 and the completed application form. On exam day bring your original ID.
Medical certificate (CRC)
Get a psychophysical report at an authorised Driver Medical Centre (Centro de Reconocimiento de Conductores). The DGT states the report must be submitted within 90 days. The price is set by each centre and is paid to the centre, not to the DGT.
Official DGT fee
Fee 2.1 was €94.05 when we checked. It covers two exam attempts; if you fail twice you need a new application and fee. A passed part is kept for two years. You pay this only through official DGT channels.
How to apply
Book an appointment (cita previa) on the DGT website and hand in your documents at the Jefatura, or check whether online submission is available for your case on the DGT electronic office. Demand is high in some provinces, so book early.
Theory exam vs practical test
The theory exam is a 30-question computer test (maximum 3 mistakes), available in English. The practical test is a separate driving exam on public roads that you take after passing the theory; it requires a dual-control car — in practice usually through a driving school.
Do you need the exam at all? Licence exchange
EU/EEA licences are valid in Spain and can be exchanged. Non-EU licences can only be exchanged if Spain has an exchange agreement with the issuing country; otherwise, once you are a resident you must pass the Spanish exams. Check the DGT list of countries with agreements before booking.
FAQ
Do I have to enrol in a driving school?
No, not for the theory exam. You can apply independently. For the practical test you need a suitable dual-control vehicle, which usually means lessons with a driving school.
Can TestDGT book my exam?
No. TestDGT is a private study platform. Official applications and fees are handled directly with the DGT. We can answer questions about the process on WhatsApp.
Is the TestDGT price the same as the DGT fee?
No. The DGT fee and the medical report are official costs paid to the DGT and the medical centre. TestDGT plans are an optional study service, paid separately.
